This 1888 building lives in a part of Lisbon that's slowly rejuvenating. Like that older aunt who refuses to sit at the grown-ups’ table because she'd rather listen to what the younger ones are saying. Here, families and travellers share a neighbourhood that’s a kind of organised chaos. Full of ideas, cafés, and the (very) friendly coexistence between old world charm and new world routines.
The building, once a loud shade of red, has changed clothes. It now wears green tiles, like someone who knows how to say, "Yes, I’m old, but ready.” Outside, the traffic and noise are real. We can’t ignore that. Well, maybe you can, by stepping inside the house. High‑quality windows were installed to make sure the outside noise stays where it belongs. Every little detail was thought through, discussed and debated: from custom made intercom buttons to tailor-fitted handles and hardware, all designed with great care. São Bento Street, full of art and antiques, some more valuable than others, is two minutes from Rato metro station, between Estrela and Príncipe Real, two of Lisbon’s most charismatic neighbourhoods.
Here, the past isn’t decorative, it’s an inspiration for new brand ideas. Out back, the metal balconies open onto a green garden that makes passersby stop and stare. And, of course, a mix of eccentric charm and excellent small talk. This building blends period architecture with the kind of unpredictable energy you only find in a neighbourhood that’s always changing. Just steps from bookshops, tascas and pastry shops, São Bento is one of those places you never see the same way twice.

The Sharing Cities ‘lighthouse’ programme is a proving ground for a better, common approach to making smart cities a reality, financed by the European Commission. Lisbon, Milan and London seek to develop affordable, integrated, commercial-scale smart city solutions with a high market potential. The energy efficiency and sustainable building is Reabilita's main goal, as the only SME and private company in Lisbon's consortium. The other partners involved are Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, EDP, Emel, Altice, Ceiia, Instituto Superior Técnico and Lisboa ENova.
