In Madragoa, the old and for many, the true Lapa, among the familiar façades and narrow streets we all know so well, there has always been a building with four apartments. One per floor, with a classic staircase featuring a skylight, and a shared courtyard full of stories to tell. All of it with a simplicity that’s hard to match. It doesn’t make grand claims, but its charm can be felt from afar.
Reabilita preserved all those details that gave the building its soul: the old doors, the steps, the ironwork, the entrance flooring, and the fully restored ceilings. The interior of each unit is left to the imagination of its new owner - or, as a saying (possibly invented in Madragoa, though we can’t be entirely sure) goes, “tailored to the client.”
Lisbon is right outside the door, with the tram passing just next to the building - a constant reminder that nowhere is more central than Madragoa. The rehabilitation of São João da Mata truly preserves the neighborhood’s popular essence. And it stays true to what Reabilita has always advocated: rehabilitate according to what the building itself calls for, without ever stealing its origins (that would be irresponsible).
